1,786 Students Affected as Floods Close Penang Schools, SPM Candidates Get Special Measures
A total of 1,786 students in Penang are affected by the ongoing floods, with three schools implementing home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) on Monday and Tuesday. The Education Ministry has activated 'Ops Payung' to ensure safe travel to exam centres for SPM candidates facing unfavourable weather conditions.
The affected schools, SK Lahar Yooi, SK Padang Menora, and SK Guar Perahu, have been turned into temporary flood relief centres, making it impossible for classes to be held there. The decision to conduct PdPR was made after a review found that many classrooms were being used to house flood victims. Detailed instructions on conducting PdPR and managing teachers' schedules will be issued to the schools.
In addition to these three schools, SK Permatang Berangan and SJK (C) Chung Ling, also designated as emergency evacuation centres, will conduct PdPR. The department has compiled data on students potentially affected by floods to ensure they can be relocated or assisted in reaching exam centres. Students affected by the floods will be allowed to attend school in casual clothes next week to prioritise their safety and comfort.
The 2025 SPM examinations are scheduled from November 3 to December 23. The Education Ministry's 'Ops Payung' initiative is in place to ensure the safety of students travelling to examination centres. The department's decision to implement PdPR and allow casual clothing for affected students demonstrates their commitment to prioritising students' well-being during this challenging time.
