12-Party Alliance Slams RPO Amendment, Demands Reinstatement of Article 20
A 12-party alliance has strongly opposed a recent amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), arguing it undermines democratic rights. The alliance, led by AMM Nasir Uddin, the Chief Election Commissioner, has submitted a formal letter to his office, demanding the reinstatement of the previous 14th amendment provisions.
The alliance, in its letter dated early November 2025, expressed its vehement opposition to the amendment. The change requires each constituent party in an electoral alliance to use its own party symbol in the election. The alliance believes this amendment undermines the very purpose of forming an alliance - to win elections collectively and have the right to choose symbols as per their preference.
In past national elections, different political parties have contested under their own or another allied party's symbol. The alliance has urged the election commission to take necessary measures to reinstate the previous provision of the 14th amendment of the RPO.
The 12-party alliance has made its stance clear: the amendment to the RPO is unacceptable and must be reversed. The alliance has called upon the chief election commissioner to restore the provisions of the 14th amendment, ensuring that allied parties can continue to choose their symbols freely.
