Police Discover Illegal Fireworks in Transit Van - 148 kg of illegal fireworks seized at German border crossing
Customs officials in Osnabrück have seized a significant quantity of dangerous fireworks after a man attempted to smuggle them from the Netherlands into Germany near Bad Bentheim. The driver was found to be in possession of 148 kilograms of Category IV fireworks, which require professional handling due to their hazardous nature.
The fireworks were discovered hidden among work equipment in eight boxes within the man's van. The driver was unable to produce the necessary import permit, leading to his arrest. Following the incident, the driver was ordered to post bail of €1,500 and criminal proceedings have been initiated against him. This seizure comes as a result of increased vigilance by customs and federal police in the Bad Bentheim area, following recent incidents involving illegal incendiary devices.
The confiscated fireworks pose a substantial risk and require careful handling by professionals. The driver's attempt to smuggle them without the required permit has resulted in his arrest and the initiation of criminal proceedings. This serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations when transporting hazardous materials across borders.
