18-Year-Old Challenges BMC Voting Age, Awaits High Court Ruling
The Bombay High Court has been handling various petitions leading up to the local body elections. Among them, an 18-year-old petitioner, Rupika Singh, has sought inclusion in the BMC electoral roll after her application was rejected due to the age limit.
Singh's plea challenges the age cut-off for voters, arguing that her statutory right to vote has been violated. Her case is among several petitions the high court is considering, including those related to reservation and delimitation of wards. The court has adjourned hearings on these petitions to November 6, when the draft electoral roll for all municipal corporations will be published. Singh's name will only appear on the list if her petition is successful. The Supreme Court has urged the high court to grant an urgent hearing to these petitions.
The Bombay High Court is set to decide on Singh's petition and others related to the upcoming local body elections. The court's ruling will determine the final electoral roll and potentially impact the voting rights of many individuals.
