62,000 German households join 2026 Microcensus to shape national policies

Around 62,000 households across Germany are taking part in the 2026 Microcensus, the country's largest annual household survey. In Baden-Württemberg, tens of thousands of homes—including those in Villingen-Schwenningen—have been randomly selected to participate. The data collected will shape decisions in politics, economics, and social policy.

The survey is being carried out by the Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg. Households chosen at random will receive a letter with login details for online participation. Alternatively, respondents can complete the questionnaire by phone or on paper.

Only one adult per household needs to provide information. The questions cover areas such as marital status, education, and employment. By law, participation is mandatory, but all responses remain strictly confidential. The office anonymises personal data before using it for analysis. The results help track population trends, economic conditions, and social changes. Federal and state authorities rely on this data to plan policies and allocate resources.

The Microcensus ensures that decision-makers have up-to-date information on Germany's population. The anonymised findings will support planning in areas like housing, education, and labour markets. Selected households must respond, but their privacy is fully protected by law.
