72-Year-Old with Dementia Found Alive After Massive Canal Search in Datteln
A man with dementia went missing in Datteln on Monday evening after visiting a hardware store with his wife. Emergency services launched a large-scale search involving over 50 personnel, including fire crews, rescue dogs, and diving teams. The operation ended successfully when the man was found near a canal, severely hypothermic but alive. The incident began around 5:00 p.m. when the 72-year-old man disappeared while shopping. His family raised the alarm, prompting police to request assistance from the Datteln fire department at 9:05 p.m. under mutual aid agreements.
The search effort quickly expanded. Two fire department boats patrolled the water, while mantrailing dogs tracked scents on land. Two drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras scanned the area from above. The German Lifeguard Association (DLRG), dive teams from Dortmund and Dorsten, and rescue dog units from North Rhine-Westphalia joined the operation.
Authorities initially focused on the canal, suspecting the man might have wandered there due to his condition. After hours of coordinated searching, responders located him near the waterway. He was suffering from severe hypothermia and required immediate medical attention.
Incident commander Sebastian Kiffer later highlighted the smooth collaboration between agencies. The Recklinghausen district control centre provided crucial logistical support, ensuring resources arrived where needed. The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being reunited with his family. Emergency teams credited the successful outcome to rapid deployment and inter-agency cooperation. The operation demonstrated how specialised equipment and trained personnel can make a difference in high-risk missing person cases.
