81-Year-Old Rheinfelden Volunteer Awarded Germany’s Highest Civilian Honor
Ilsemie Dumont, an 81-year-old from Rheinfelden, has received Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit. The honour recognises her decades of volunteer work and dedication to the local community. Mayor Klaus Eberhardt presented the award on behalf of the German president on 17 January 2026.
Dumont’s contributions span politics, social welfare, and refugee support. In 1979, she co-founded Rheinfelden’s Green Party and later served for years on the city council. Beyond party work, she held leadership roles in the SPD and other local organisations.
Her advocacy for older adults included projects like senior benches and cinema screenings, organised through the Workers’ Welfare Association. She also opened her home to refugees from Kosovo, offering practical help during their resettlement.
The Federal Cross of Merit highlights her lifelong commitment to social responsibility. Described as reliable and deeply conscientious, Dumont has spent years championing causes that strengthen community bonds.
The award ceremony took place in Rheinfelden, where Dumont’s impact has been felt for over four decades. Her work in politics, senior care, and refugee aid leaves a lasting mark on the city. The recognition confirms her status as a pillar of volunteerism in the region.
