Home-grown Spruce for the Chancellor from the Sauerland - A 13-Metre Sauerland Fir Lights Up Germany’s Chancellery for Christmas

A 13-metre Nordmann fir from Sauerland will stand outside the German Chancellery this Christmas. The tree, sourced from a forest near Plettenberg, was officially handed over to Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday. This year’s donation comes from his own home region.

The German Forest Owners’ Association (AGDW) donates a large Christmas tree to the Chancellery annually. This time, the selection fell on a towering fir from Märkisches Sauerland, close to Plettenberg. A local farmer provided the tree, though their name has not been disclosed.

The tree now stands outside the Chancellery, ready for the festive season. Its placement continues a tradition of regional donations to the government’s Christmas display. This year’s choice reflects the chancellor’s personal connection to Sauerland.
