A Wall Against a Footpath: City Council Approves Redesign at Place of Friendship
Halle’s city council has given the green light to a major redesign of People’s Friendship Square. The project will cost nearly €1 million and aims to transform the well-known public space. One key change involves blocking an unofficial pedestrian shortcut.
The approved plans focus on restructuring the square’s layout. A new wall will be built to close off a popular desire path that cuts through from the square to Südstadtring. This route, though widely used, was never an official walkway.
As of December 2025, no details have been released about accountability measures for the officials overseeing the renovation. The council has not yet announced any consequences or specific plans related to the project’s management.
The redesign moves forward with a budget close to €1 million. The wall will redirect foot traffic along designated paths instead of the informal shortcut. Further updates on the project’s progress are expected in the coming months.
