A100's Spree Crossing Decision in 2025 to Shape Berlin's Urban Future
Berlin's urban planning faces a complex challenge with the continuation of the A100 motorway. The project managers are evaluating various options for crossing the Spree, including tunneling and adding an additional bridge. The reconstruction of the Elsenbrücke is inseparably linked to this decision, causing political and urban tensions.
The final section of the A100, from Treptower Park to Storkower Street in Prenzlauer Berg, is set to be completed by the end of 2025. By then, it will be clear whether the Spree will be crossed by a tunnel or an additional bridge. If a tunnel is chosen, the new Elsenbrücke can be completed with six lanes by 2028. However, if a bridge is constructed, the Elsenbrücke's new construction will be delayed, the temporary bridge will remain longer, and only three lanes will be available permanently.
The project is controversial, with a clear majority of local residents opposing the construction. Despite this, the federal government and the black-red Senate support the plans for the A100 extension. A temporary bridge is currently handling traffic in both directions until the northwest part of the Elsenbrücke is rebuilt in 2025.
The decision on how the A100 will cross the Spree is expected by the end of 2025. This will determine the fate of the Elsenbrücke reconstruction and the future of traffic in the densely populated neighborhoods of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg.
