AAPI adults still face racial hostility despite decline in hate crimes
A new report highlights ongoing concerns about discrimination and hate incidents among Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults. While some forms of abuse have declined, many still face racial hostility and financial stress in their daily lives.
One in four AAPI adults say they experienced a hate crime or incident in the past year. Despite a drop in anti-Asian hate crimes overall, recent data shows a worrying rise in incidents targeting South Asians.
Verbal abuse remains a persistent issue, with 15% of AAPI adults reporting racial harassment in the last 12 months. Around 10% were called a racial or ethnic slur during the same period. These figures, though still high, represent a slight decrease compared to two years ago.
Ambar Capoor, a 52-year-old resident of Los Angeles, has often been made to feel like an outsider—even in his own diverse neighbourhood. His experience reflects a broader unease: nearly 30% of AAPI adults believe they are 'extremely' or 'very' likely to face discrimination in the next five years. Financial pressures also weigh heavily on the community. About 40% of AAPI adults cite personal finances as a major source of stress. In contrast, only 10% say discrimination itself is a primary cause of anxiety in their lives. Preliminary FBI data suggests a decline in anti-Asian hate crimes between 2024 and 2025. However, the recent increase in incidents affecting South Asians indicates that challenges remain for specific groups within the AAPI community.
The report reveals a mixed picture of progress and ongoing struggles. While some forms of hate have decreased, many AAPI adults continue to experience racial hostility and financial strain. The data also underscores the need for targeted support, particularly for South Asian communities facing a rise in incidents.
