Aargau Council approves CHF 17.5 million in sweeping budget cuts for 2026
The Aargau Cantonal Council has finalised a series of budget cuts for 2026. A blanket reduction of CHF 17.5 million was approved across all five departments, but several other proposals faced rejection. The decisions followed debates between right-leaning and left-wing parties over spending priorities.
The council voted 73 to 63 in favour of the CHF 17.5 million cut, backed by the SVP and FDP. Opposition came from the Centre and left-wing parties, who argued against sweeping reductions. Despite this, the measure passed, affecting every department equally.
The approved cuts will reduce spending by CHF 17.5 million in 2026, with the SVP and FDP securing the majority vote. Several targeted reductions, however, were blocked after opposition from left-wing and Centre parties. The final budget reflects a mix of broad savings and preserved allocations in key areas.
