Aargau Rejects Cuts to Asylum Seekers’ Daily Food Allowance
Asylum seekers in Aargau will keep their current daily food allowance of 8.50 Swiss francs. The cantonal council rejected a proposal to cut the payment by 50 cents, leaving the rate unchanged since its increase in March 2024. The Swiss People’s Party (SVP) had pushed for the reduction, arguing that asylum-related spending was already too high. They pointed out that the allowance had only recently risen from 8 francs to 8.50 francs per day. The rejection means asylum seekers, Ukrainian refugees, and temporarily admitted individuals in Aargau will continue receiving 8.50 francs daily for food. The decision keeps welfare provisions at their current level, avoiding further cuts to support payments for now.
