Abai Region’s $2B Infrastructure Boom Transforms Roads, Water, and Trade by 2028

The Abai Region is undergoing significant infrastructure developments. A Chinese company, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), is constructing a bypass road around the city of Semey, with completion slated for 2025. Meanwhile, the region is also working on improving its water supply and transportation networks.

The CRBC is expected to finish the Semey bypass road in 2025, which will enhance domestic and cross-border transportation links. This project is set to strengthen trade and economic ties with neighboring regions and countries. Additionally, the Abai Region is implementing 33 projects to provide residents with access to clean drinking water.

In 2025, the region completed the reconstruction of 184 kilometers of the republican highway Kalbatau–Maikapshagai. Furthermore, the governor has outlined plans to develop tourism along the shores of Lake Alakol. To boost infrastructure, a deal has been signed with China Railway Asia-Europe Construction Investment Co. Ltd. to build a bypass around Semey, with completion scheduled for 2028. The Taldykorgan–Kalbatau–Ust-Kamenogorsk highway reconstruction is nearing completion, further improving transportation networks. Authorities have also conducted repairs to address defects in heating networks in preparation for the heating season.

The Abai Region's infrastructure developments, including the Semey bypass road, water supply projects, and highway reconstructions, are expected to significantly improve the lives of residents and boost the regional economy. These projects also aim to strengthen ties with neighboring regions and countries.
