Activists leave Bremen’s abandoned building after two-week protest for housing
Activist group 'Leerstand Gestalten' has vacated the long-vacant structure on Bremen’s Kornstraße after a two-week occupation. The activists aimed to highlight the property's poor condition and advocate for its conversion into affordable housing.
The building, owned by an unnamed individual, had been empty for years and infested with mold, making it uninhabitable. The activists, who sought to draw attention to the issue, decided to occupy the property. However, they only stayed during the day due to health risks, ensuring a peaceful eviction.
During their occupation, the activists engaged with the local neighborhood through various events. They held workshops, readings, and film screenings, gaining support for their cause. Despite their efforts, the owner filed a criminal complaint for trespassing, leading to the police clearing the property early Tuesday morning.
The owner is now considering selling the property after the eviction. The activists' occupation brought attention to the building's dire condition and the need for affordable housing in the area. Although the occupation has ended, the conversation around the building's future continues.
