AfD politician’s Hitler-style speech sparks outrage and internal party scrutiny
A controversial speech by Alexander Eichwald at an AfD youth event has triggered widespread debate. The 29-year-old politician, who joined the party in late 2025, delivered a speech mimicking Hitler’s style—complete with exaggerated gestures and rolled 'R's. Questions quickly arose over whether the performance was a deliberate provocation or a genuine display of extremist rhetoric.
Eichwald, a Herford city councillor, had been appointed to four local committees, including youth welfare and social affairs, before his appearance at the AfD youth organisation Generation Deutschland. At its founding congress in Gießen on 29 November 2025, he addressed delegates as ‘party comrades’ in a manner reminiscent of Nazi-era speeches. Clips of his performance spread rapidly online, fuelling speculation about his motives.
The incident has left the AfD facing internal scrutiny over how Eichwald, a recently appointed figure, gained a platform. His expulsion proceedings are underway, while the lack of clarity around his motives keeps the controversy alive. The episode also raises questions about vetting processes within the party’s youth wing.
