AGP reaffirms support for tribal status to Assam’s six indigenous communities
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has reiterated its backing for granting tribal status to six indigenous communities of Assam. The party held a recent zoom meeting to discuss this demand, with senior leaders in attendance.
AGP's stance remains solid despite some tribal organisations' objections. The party has held a special meeting with Matak community representatives to discuss their demand for tribal status. The six communities seeking ST status are Matak, Moran, Koch-Rajbongshi, Tai-Ahom, Chutia, and Tea Tribes.
The AGP leadership, including Birendra Prasad Baishya, Phani Bhushan Choudhury, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Prithviraj Rava, and Punakan Baruah, attended the zoom meeting. They reaffirmed their support for recognising Scheduled Tribe status for these communities. The next meeting to push this demand is scheduled for November 29, 2025. AGP plans to hold similar meetings with the remaining communities to extend its support.
AGP's commitment to supporting the tribal status demand of the six indigenous communities remains unchanged. The party will continue to engage with these communities and push for their recognition as Scheduled Tribes.
