Airbus and DRF Luftrettung Agree on a Letter of Intent for Purchasing Ten H140 Helicopters
In a strategic move towards fleet modernization, Airbus Helicopters has secured a deal with DRF Luftrettung, a prominent air rescue operator, to purchase ten of their latest light twin-engine helicopter, the H140. This new addition to Airbus Helicopters' range is designed to advance the company's modernization strategy, emphasizing versatility, efficiency, and advanced technology.
The H140, set to enter service for the emergency medical services segment in 2028, boasts a modern twin-engine configuration for enhanced safety and performance. As a light helicopter, it offers agility and operational flexibility, making it suitable for roles like emergency medical services, utility operations, and other public service applications.
The H140 is equipped with the latest technological innovations, embodying Airbus's commitment to innovation and leadership in civilian rotorcraft markets. While the precise technical specifications and avionics suites are yet to be detailed, the H140's introduction alongside models like the H160 and H225M highlights it as a key new product in Airbus Helicopters' range.
DRF Luftrettung's decision to purchase the H140 is seen as a strong seal of approval on the product. The helicopter's large cabin, optimized layout, and large sliding doors facilitate access to the cabin, accommodating up to six passengers comfortably. The H140's rear loading capabilities allow the use of various stretcher systems and transport incubators, making it well-suited for critical medical emergency transport operations.
The H140 is powered by new Safran engines and features a new T-shaped tail boom and an optimized Fenestron, reducing sound levels. Its large windows and accessibility features, such as large clamshell doors and a high tail boom, make it a user-friendly choice for emergency services.
Krystian Pracz, CEO of DRF Luftrettung, stated that the H140 purchase will help modernize their helicopter fleet and provide their teams with the necessary tools for life-saving missions. The DRF Group, which operates more than 50 Airbus helicopters at 37 bases throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, has been in partnership with Airbus Helicopters for five decades.
The H140 was unveiled at the vertical lift industry show, VERTICON, in Dallas, Texas, and DRF Luftrettung has agreed to be one of the launch customers for the new helicopter. The deal, signified by a Letter of Intent (LoI), marks a significant step for Airbus Helicopters in the European emergency medical services market, with DRF Luftrettung being one of the biggest HEMS operators in Europe.
In 2024, the DRF Group carried out a total of 37,874 missions, highlighting the importance of reliable and versatile helicopters like the H140 in their life-saving operations. The introduction of the H140 is expected to further strengthen this partnership and contribute to the ongoing success of DRF Luftrettung's mission-critical operations.
