Aircraft manufacturer Airbus secures deal for up to 36 H140 helicopters with Metro Aviation
The Airbus H140 helicopter, a new addition to the vertical lift industry, was unveiled at the VERTICON show in Dallas, Texas. This helicopter, equipped with a five-blade bearingless main rotor, is set to revolutionise the light twin-engined category with its performance, cost-effectiveness, and passenger and crew comfort.
One of the launch customers for the H140 helicopter is Metro Aviation, a global leader for multi-mission helicopter customisations based in Shreveport, Louisiana. Metro Aviation has signed an agreement for 12 H140 helicopters from Airbus Helicopters, with options for 24 additional units. The company, which operates air medical helicopters and airplanes for healthcare providers, is expected to enhance its operational capabilities with the entry of the H140 helicopter, planned for 2028 in the emergency medical services (EMS) segment.
Enhanced Performance and Capacity
The H140 helicopter is powered by twin Safran Arriel 2E engines, offering more power, better fuel efficiency, and improved single-engine performance compared to older models such as the EC145. The latest H140 features a five-bladed rotor system that increases useful load capacity by 150 kg, allowing for more medical equipment, supplies, and possibly an additional patient or crew member. It also has a slightly higher maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) and greater payload capacity, essential for carrying EMS teams and critical care gear.
Advanced Avionics and Safety Systems
Equipped with the Helionix avionics suite, the H140 helicopter boasts a modern digital cockpit with enhanced readability and situational awareness. The four-axis autopilot system reduces pilot workload and improves flight safety, especially important for challenging EMS missions. The Fenestron enclosed tail rotor design increases safety on the ground and reduces noise emissions, beneficial for urban operations.
Operational Efficiency and Versatility
The H140 helicopter's greater range and speed enhance its ability to perform emergency transports over wider areas and in less time, critical in trauma and neonatal critical care situations. Increased internal cabin space provides more room for medical teams and life-saving equipment, enabling advanced interventions during flight. Proven multi-role functionality supports various public safety missions, which umbrella EMS operations as well.
Environmental Advantages
The helicopter’s low noise and emissions profile make it one of the quietest and most environmentally friendly in its class, important when operating in populated areas or hospitals.
Global Adoption Reflecting Reliability
With over 1,700 H145 helicopters in service and millions of flight hours, the model is globally trusted for public safety and emergency services, indicating reliability and operational maturity.
Bart Reijnen, President of Airbus Helicopters in the U.S. and Head of the North America Region, expressed pride in partnering with Metro Aviation in the launch of the H140 helicopter. The H140 helicopter features a new T-shaped tail boom with an optimised Fenestron, reducing sound levels. The H140 helicopter is being launched in the EMS sector.
