A Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737, en route to Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, encountered an unexpected incident on Monday, as one of its engines caught fire during the flight. The plane, carrying 166 passengers, safely returned to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after declaring an emergency.

Passenger Sarah, who was seated near the affected engine, reported witnessing a bright flash out the window. Another passenger, Ruth Sorensen, described the incident as sounding like lightning had struck the plane or something had exploded. Passengers could hear the engine shutting down and saw flames coming out.

The FAA is currently investigating the incident, but specific details about the cause of the engine failure or any injuries have not been provided. The airline, however, has expressed its appreciation for the professionalism of the pilots and flight attendants in handling the situation.

Upon landing at LAX, fire trucks were present to attend to the plane. Passengers spent several hours on the airport floor, waiting to board a new Sun Country flight, from 3 a.m. until 8:30 a.m.

The airline prioritised the safety of its passengers and crew throughout the incident. CNN's Christine Sever contributed to this report.

As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols in air travel. Passengers on the flight, including Sarah and Ruth, praised the calm and efficient response of the airline's staff, with one passenger next to Sarah holding hands and comforting each other, bracing for the worst.

This incident marks another in a series of engine-related issues that have been reported in recent years, highlighting the need for ongoing maintenance and safety checks in the aviation industry.
