In the aftermath of the fatal Air India plane crash, the airline has pledged to provide 250,000 Euros to each family of the deceased victims as an immediate financial support. The sole survivor among the 242 passengers will also receive the same amount, on top of the promised 100,570 Euros from the parent company, Tata Group.
According to reports by NDTV and other Indian media, over 270 lives were lost in the catastrophe, both on the downed aircraft and on the ground in Ahmedabad. However, an official death toll has yet to be released by the government. Police in Ahmedabad revealed over the weekend that identifying the remains at the crash site through DNA matching is proving challenging, and numerous bodies were reportedly charred beyond recognition. Several individuals are still missing from the incident and therefore cannot be accounted for in the death toll. Authorities did not initially provide figures regarding the number of injured.
Shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport, the Boeing 787-8 collided with a medical university's student hostel before crashing into a residential area, resulting in a raging inferno. Of the 241 individuals on board, 240 are believed to have perished, with a miraculous British passenger being the lone survivor. The ill-fated flight was bound for London.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation promptly established a committee to investigate the incident, with a three-month deadline for submitting a comprehensive report on the accident's causation. The committee, led by the Ministry of Home Affairs, will also make recommendations to prevent future air disasters. Representatives from various authorities will work independently of any concurrent investigations.
