In the world of aviation, runway designators play a crucial role in guiding planes safely to and from their destinations. One prime example of an airport with multiple runways in various directions is Rome Fiumicino Airport.

Runways are numbered using magnetic, not geographic, values. This means that north on a compass is represented as 360 degrees in aviation. However, at other airports, runways may be in different directions. Airports with heavy air traffic loads can have more than one runway to ensure smooth operations.

Runway designators can be examined for various airports around the world to understand this system better. Runways are numbered on both sides to allow planes to land and take off from both sides. Some runways at airports with heavy traffic may be parallel to each other.

The numbers correspond to the magnetic direction in the area where the runway is located. For instance, 16L, 16C, and 16R are three parallel runways aligned roughly 160° magnetic, each distinguished by their left, center, or right position. If there are only two parallel runways, only L and R are used; C is added for three parallels.

The letters L, C, R, and T next to runway designators indicate the relative position of parallel runways at an airport. L stands for Left, designating the leftmost runway when facing the direction of landing or takeoff. C stands for Center, used only when there are three parallel runways, to identify the middle one. R stands for Right, marking the rightmost runway in the group. T stands for Temporary, typically used when a runway is temporarily shifted, such as for construction, and the original designation is no longer accurate.

It's worth noting that runway numbers can change over time due to the magnetic north shifting towards Russia. For example, the 05-23 runway of Istanbul Atatürk Airport has been changed from 06-24 due to this shift. Runways are named according to the value closest to the radial on the compass.

At airports close to magnetic north, an additional runway designator letter T is used. Alert airport runway designators in the north of Canada are 05T / 23T. The letters L, C, R, and T indicate the position of the runway in relation to other runways in the same direction (Left, Center, Right, or Threshold).

In some cases, runways may be in the same direction at an airport. Runway designators are labels for runways, often consisting of numbers and letters, making it easier for pilots to identify their landing and takeoff paths.
