Zurich Airport to Implement Noise Reduction Measures and Operational Adjustments

In a bid to address noise pollution concerns and improve overall operations, the Federal Council of Switzerland has approved an amendment to the sectoral plan for transport, specifically the aviation infrastructure section (SIL). This move comes in response to several complaints against Zurich Airport's operating regulations, which were upheld by the Federal Administrative Court in 2021.

The airport operator at Zurich Airport is now required to comply with stringent noise protection regulations. This includes ensuring adherence to planning noise limits, implementing noise reduction measures, and enforcing restrictions particularly for night time. A curfew generally starting at 11:00 PM has been instituted to reduce aircraft noise.

These operational restrictions are accompanied by noise fees for loud aircraft and the adoption of measures consistent with Swiss and EU aviation environmental regulations. The aim is to minimize the noise impact on residents after 11 PM. The airport is also obliged to use improvements to infrastructure and operations to reduce delays.

The court has also instructed the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) to reassess the night-time noise and delay situations from 11.00 pm to 11.30 pm.

In addition, the Federal Council has announced new measures for long-haul flights. Starting from now, higher charges will be imposed for take-offs after 11.00 p.m. in the loudest noise classes.

An amendment to the operating regulations of Zurich Airport is now required to reflect these changes. The aim of these measures is to reduce delays and encourage the use of quieter aircraft. The SIL object sheet now contains a condition that reflects these requirements.

These adjustments mark a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents around Zurich Airport and ensuring the airport operates in a more environmentally friendly manner.
