Alexandria's professional staff overwhelmingly votes to unionize in historic election

Alexandria's professional employees have voted overwhelmingly to join a union. The decision marks the fifth city bargaining unit to successfully organize since 2021. Official certification of the result is expected by March 11.

The vote saw 155 workers in favor of unionizing, with just one opposing. They will now be represented by AFSCME Council 20. Their main goals include negotiating fairer pay, better benefits, and greater transparency in the workplace.

City Manager Jim Parajon has publicly backed the unionization push. Meanwhile, Alexandria is preparing to renew contracts with police and fire departments. It also plans to adopt its first formal agreement with administrative and technical staff.

Since 2021, four of the city's five recognized bargaining groups have already won union representation elections. This latest vote continues that trend, with workers now seeking their first collective bargaining agreement.

The near-unanimous vote signals strong support for union representation among Alexandria's professional staff. Formal certification will pave the way for contract negotiations. The city now faces discussions with multiple employee groups over wages, conditions, and workplace policies.
