Ready to fly? Hannover's Airbus A310 heads to Serengeti Park as obstacles lift

After a long-winded battle over the transportation of an old Bundeswehr Airbus to the Serengeti Park in the South Heath, the green light is finally flashing. Says the Region of Hannover, "No more nature conservation concerns."

A new method has been employed to reduce the aircraft’s fuselage from 6.80 meters to 5.90 meters, ensuring minimal damage to trees in the landscape protection area. Additionally, the "reverse rigging" method has been utilized, where branches are tied upwards to safeguard the trees. This novel approach was confirmed to cause no harm during a practical test employing a model of the aircraft's fuselage. Consequently, a nature conservation exemption permit is no longer necessary.

New venture in the making

The Serengeti Park acquired the decommissioned Airbus "Kurt Schumacher" with an intention to transform the aircraft into a unique dining experience. Prior plans called for the transportation of the fuselage across the approximately 50-kilometer distance from the airport to Hodenhagen during the summer of 2022. The removed wings and tail fin have already arrived at the park.

The Region of Hannover denied the park’s appeal for the nature conservation exemption for the transport back in mid-November 2023.

Transport in the horizon

Environmental advisor Jens Palandt of the Region of Hannover stated: "We've had extensive discussions with the Serengeti Park during the lengthy process, and we've found an eco-friendly solution with the new method now." exterior to the protected area, tree felling may be necessary, hence transportation can only commence after the end of the breeding and nesting season, starting from October 1st.

Park owner Fabrizio Sepe expressed his excitement, though an application to the road traffic authority in Langenhagen is still necessary for the heavy transport, as well as the construction of specialized equipment for lowering and transporting the aircraft fuselage by almost a meter. An application with the railway must also be made to cross a track. Sepe reminded, "An exotic project like this - you never know what else might pop up."

With the approval granted, the Airbus transportation project to Serengeti Park advances in the aerospace industry, promising a unique dining experience. As the greenlight arrives from the Finnance department, the park's efforts in the transportation sector will merge with the infrastructure industry for the project's completion. The transportation of the aircraft is projected for October 2025, with the acquisition of road traffic approval still pending.
