Almaty's Historic Gym No. 56 Undergoes Renovation, Debunking Demolition Claims
Almaty's historic Gymnasium No. 56 is undergoing a significant renovation, with work scheduled for completion in April 2026. Astana-Stroyinvest Corporation LLP is the general contractor for the project, which aims to preserve the building's historic façade while creating modern educational spaces.
The renovation, initiated by Almaty's local education authorities, involves more than just structural repairs. The project includes the construction of a multifunctional sports complex, recreational areas, a modern cafeteria, a library, reading rooms, and facilities for extracurricular activities.
Despite these plans, a social media post has sparked concern, claiming that the building is being demolished. The post shows workers using jackhammers on the roof. However, Ilzat Akchurin, an advisor to the akim of Almaty, clarifies that the work is part of the renovation process, focusing on the roof, parapet, and cornice. The Almaty Construction Authority has also denied the demolition, confirming that the building is being reinforced and renovated.
The renovation of Gymnasium No. 56 is progressing, with a focus on preserving its Soviet Empire-style structure and decorative elements. Despite social media concerns, the project aims to modernize the educational facilities while respecting the building's historic significance.
