Altai Krai Crackdown Nets 50 Illegal Weapons, Tougher Penalties for Poachers
Authorities in Altai Krai have seized unregistered firearms and ammunition from poachers, with tougher penalties now in place. The recent crackdown resulted in the confiscation of around 50 units of illegal weapons and related items in the Soloneshensky and Petroparlovsky districts.
A group of poachers was apprehended near the border of Altai Krai’s Soloneshensky and Altaisky districts and the Republic of Altai. They were found in possession of a roe buck killed without a permit, leading to a fine of approximately 120,000 rubles. However, the penalties do not stop there. Authorities also discovered and seized additional illegal weapons and gunpowder, which could result in prison time for the poachers.
The poachers' homemade firearm adds another layer to their potential punishment. Russian courts have been imposing real prison sentences for such offenses, reflecting a tougher stance on illegal hunting. This shift in sentencing aims to deter future poaching incidents.
The Altai Krai government has been proactive in combating poaching, investing in new snowmobiles, vehicles, and drones to strengthen enforcement teams. These efforts have led to a decline in illegal hunting incidents across the region. The recent seizures and tougher penalties serve as a reminder that poaching will not be tolerated, and those caught face significant consequences.
