America's Forests Suffer Unseen Damage from Ozone Exposure, According to Recent Research
In a groundbreaking study, researchers have analyzed the response of about 85 tree species and 1.5 million trees across the coterminous U.S., providing insights into ozone pollution's impact on tree health. The study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, was led by Nathan Pavlovic, the lead geospatial data scientist at Sonoma Technology Inc., and Charles Driscoll, University Professor of Environmental Systems and Distinguished Professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
The new research advances previous studies by scaling up to a comprehensive national analysis, incorporating multifactor ecological interactions, and leveraging modern data techniques. Unlike many previous smaller or localized studies, this study uses large datasets covering nationwide regions, enhancing representativeness and statistical robustness. It also considers multiple interacting pollutants, such as particulate matter, and modifiers like greenness or residential green space, adding complexity beyond ozone’s direct effects.
One of the key findings is the vulnerability of western U.S. forests to ozone pollution. The study found that conifers, which have a longer growing season, may be more sensitive to ozone than hardwoods. Additionally, the response of tree species to ozone may be connected to limited water availability in the West.
While there is limited evidence of impacts to trees from recent ozone concentrations in the East, the response of tree species in the western U.S. is paired with higher ozone concentrations relative to the East. This difference could be due to various factors, including climate, vegetation, and emissions sources.
The study is the first to quantify how much ozone exposure harms mature trees under real-world conditions, shedding light on the importance of decreases in tree survival rates. These decreases make tree species more vulnerable to displacement by competing species, potentially leading to shifts in species abundance and distributions and decreasing biodiversity.
Despite the importance of ecosystem health for human well-being, the EPA has not established meaningful secondary standards to protect ecosystems. Daryl Lovell, Associate Director of Media Relations for University Communications, can be contacted for interviews or more information about the work.
As the team's next steps in this line of research, they aim to assess the impacts of nitrogen and sulfur deposition on trees and understand how the shift from industrial and transportation sources to area sources including agriculture and wildfires may be affecting ecosystems. They also plan to explore the broader environmental benefits of tree planting, such as its multifaceted role in soil health, habitat creation, and carbon offsetting.
The study's novel analytical approaches, including AI-driven data synthesis to detect patterns and climate influences on pollution, enable more nuanced interpretation of ozone's impact on trees. These insights contribute to a better understanding of ozone pollution's impact on tree health within broader environmental processes.
