Angola’s 50th Independence Anniversary Draws Global Leaders in Grand Celebration

Angola marked its 50th independence anniversary with a grand celebration attended by 13 foreign heads of state, including eight from the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). The event lasted over five hours and showcased the nation's diversity and military prowess.

President João Lourenço presided over the ceremony, delivering the main address at Luanda's Republic Square. The celebration highlighted Angola's 18 provinces and various branches of its armed forces.

Portugal's president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, attended the event. He shared his thoughts on Angola's independence, stating that the burden of its colonial past no longer weighs heavily. However, his views on systemic racism in Portugal sparked controversy when he denied its existence.
