United Kingdom Aims for Net Zero Emissions Transatlantic Flight with Sustainable Aviation Fuel by 2023

The UK government and industry are gearing up for a potential milestone, as plans for a net zero emissions transatlantic flight using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) could be realized as early as next year. This historic flight, powered entirely by SAF, may serve as a precursor for a greener aviation sector in the coming decades.

During a recent visit to the US, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps issued a challenge to the international airline industry, inviting them to collaborate with the UK government to facilitate a demonstrator flight in 2023. This pioneering venture could pave the way for more transatlantic flights — and many others — to rely solely on low-carbon fuel in the future.

Shapps expressed optimism about the environmental and passenger benefits of such a venture, stating, "The groundbreaking net-zero emissions flight, an industry first, will demonstrate the integral role SAF can play in decarbonizing aviation, in line with our ambitious net-zero targets. This isn't just a victory for the environment, but for passengers seeking guilt-free travel to iconic destinations like New York."

UK airlines have echoed this sentiment, with Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, declaring, "The UK’s airlines strongly support the development of a UK SAF industry, which will play a significant role in helping our sector achieve net zero emissions by 2050."

The initiative is part of the Jet Zero Council, a joint industry-government partnership aiming to deliver innovative technology and approaches to cut aviation emissions while supporting the UK economy. Estimates suggest that a UK SAF industry could support over 5,000 jobs directly, while contributing an additional 13,600 through global exports, boosting the UK economy and helping to promote regional development.

In a bid to further drive the SAF industry forward, the Department for Transport, in conjunction with Innovate UK, has unveiled a competition to fund research and development efforts aimed at achieving the goal of the world's first net zero transatlantic flight on a commercial aircraft using 100% SAF within one year. Up to £1 million in funding is expected to be made available between 2022 and 2023 for the testing and personnel costs associated with the project.
