Antonov builds up maintenance facility at Leipzig Airport - Antonov constructs a maintenance facility at Leipzig Airport
The Ukrainian aviation company, Antonov, is actively building a new maintenance hangar at Leipzig/Halle Airport, marking an expansion of their presence at the location. This development comes after the company temporarily relocated its operations to Leipzig due to the conflict in Ukraine.
The new hangar, specifically designed for Antonov 124 type giant cargo aircraft, is being constructed on a 24,000 square meter plot in the northern part of the airport. The project has been in the works since it was first reported by the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" and more recently, the latest progress has been shared by the same publication.
Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH (ALS), a 100% subsidiary of the Ukrainian state-owned company Antonov, is the signatory of the agreement for the construction of the hangar. The investment amount for the project has not been disclosed.
The airport spokesman for the project, Uwe Schuhart, has confirmed that the construction is being funded by the future user, Antonov. The construction work is currently underway at Leipzig/Halle Airport, with the hangar expected to be completed in the first half of 2027.
Since 2006, Antonov has had a maintenance base at Leipzig/Halle Airport, and with the recent relocation of their entire fleet following the Russian invasion, six Antonov aircraft are currently stationed at the airport. The regular arrivals and departures of these aircraft reflect the growing operations of Antonov at this location.
The new maintenance hangar aims to support Antonov’s ongoing operations primarily from Leipzig, providing essential maintenance services for their giant cargo aircraft. This investment is a testament to the company's commitment to its operations in Germany despite the challenging circumstances.
