Archbishop Makgoba joins Pope Leo XIV in Rome for peace and equality talks

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of Southern Africa recently visited Rome, where he participated in an international peace meeting and addressed a forum on inequality and youth unemployment in Africa. The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences organised the event, 'An Unequal World: What Alternatives?', which Makgoba attended alongside Pope Leo XIV.

Makgoba's visit began with a Meditation for Peace at the Colosseum, led by Pope Leo XIV. The archbishop joined faith leaders from diverse traditions, highlighting the importance of unity and dialogue among different religions.

Later, Makgoba spoke at the forum, focusing on the crisis of inequality and youth unemployment in Africa. He emphasised the need for resources to serve the common good and promote a more equal world. During his stay, Makgoba also pursued an interfaith initiative to foster peace in the Middle East.

Archbishop Makgoba's visit to Rome saw him engage in meaningful dialogue and action towards peace and equality. He shared a platform with Pope Leo XIV, lit a peace candle, and passed on a statement on peace to young people, underscoring the importance of reconciliation, dialogue, and fraternity among all peoples.
