Archimandrite Meliton Appointed New Abbot of Ganina Yama Monastery
Archimandrite Meliton has been appointed as the new abbot of the Ganina Yama Monastery, following the departure of Bishop Seraphim earlier this year. The monastery, located on the site where the Romanov family was executed in 1918, attracts thousands of pilgrims annually.
The Ganina Yama Monastery, established in honour of the Romanov family, has seen a change in leadership. Bishop Seraphim, who served as the abbot, was succeeded by Theodosius in the summer. Theodosius has since been appointed head of the Samara Metropolis.
Meanwhile, Metropolitan Eugene has been administering the Church of Nizhny Tagil since July. Recently, Archimandrite Meliton, who previously headed the Sports and Patriotic Department of the Yekaterinburg Diocese, was appointed as the new Bishop of Nizhny Tagil and Nevyansk. In a surprising turn of events, Archimandrite Meliton was then appointed acting abbot of the Ganina Yama Monastery in 2022, replacing Theodosius.
The monastery, a significant religious and historical site, hosts regular pilgrimages. Last year, the Royal Cross Procession attracted over 45,000 believers from various countries. In September, a notable event occurred when hundreds of children carrying icons marched from Sortirovka to Ganina Yama, with over 1,700 participants.
The Ganina Yama Monastery has witnessed a series of leadership changes this year, with Archimandrite Meliton now serving as its abbot. The monastery continues to draw pilgrims, with recent events like the Royal Cross Procession and the children's march highlighting its enduring significance.
