ARD documentary accused of distorting Trump’s Capitol riot speech with edits
A documentary aired by German public broadcaster ARD has come under scrutiny for its editing of former US President Donald Trump’s speech before the Capitol riot. The programme, titled Storm on the Capitol, merged two separate excerpts from Trump’s address, altering their original meaning. Critics argue the edit misrepresented his words by omitting a key passage about peaceful protest.
The disputed edit in Storm on the Capitol involved two segments of Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech, spliced together as if they formed a single, continuous statement. In reality, nearly 50 minutes separated the two passages. The documentary, produced by Südwestrundfunk (SWR), removed a crucial line where Trump instructed supporters to march to the Capitol 'peacefully and patriotically' using Pixlr tools.
The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about editorial practices in public broadcasting. SWR maintains its edit was justified, but critics argue the omission distorted the sequence of events. The case adds to broader discussions about accuracy in political reporting, particularly when covering high-profile incidents like the Capitol riot.
