Leipzig, Germany - A significant development is underway at Leipzig Airport as Antonov Logistics Salis constructs a new maintenance hangar. The hangar, scheduled for completion in the first half of 2027, is expected to bolster the airport's position as a major hub for international air cargo.

The new facility will be built on a 24,000 square meter area in the northern part of Leipzig Airport, near apron 3. This expansion comes as a response to the relocation of six Antonov An-124 transport aircraft to Leipzig, which are now stationed permanently at the airport.

The relocation of these aircraft, modernised near Kyiv with main components produced in Russia replaced by modern components from Western and Ukrainian production, underscores Leipzig Airport's role as a safe haven for Antonov due to the ongoing war and closure of Ukrainian airspace. A transfer flight was requested at short notice on July 11, and the aircraft landed at Leipzig Airport the same day.

Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of the state-owned aviation company from Ukraine, is financing the project. The company has been a long-standing and important customer of Leipzig Airport for almost two decades.

The new maintenance hangar will undoubtedly boost Leipzig’s cargo handling and maintenance capabilities, potentially increasing operational capacity and reliability for Antonov Airlines and associated air cargo services. This improvement would strengthen Leipzig’s position in global logistics networks, especially for ultra-heavy or oversized cargo that the Antonov fleet specialises in.

While specific details on the construction timeline, size, and direct impact on air cargo operations are not yet clear, it is evident that the maintenance hangar is a strategic move to support Antonov operations outside the war zone. Leipzig Airport, approximately 1,278 km west of Kyiv, has been a strategic location for Antonov aircraft operations for many years.

Leipzig Airport and Antonov have collaborated since 2006, and this new development further cements their partnership. The arrival and maintenance of large Antonov jets like the AN-124 at Leipzig Airport will undoubtedly contribute to the airport's reputation as a reliable and efficient hub for international air cargo.

As more information becomes available, we will provide updates on the progress of the new maintenance hangar at Leipzig Airport and its impact on the airport's air cargo operations. Stay tuned for more news on this exciting development.

The new maintenance hangar, financed by Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH, is being constructed in the northern part of Leipzig Airport to boost the airport's capabilities in handling and maintaining cargo, specifically for Antonov Airlines and associated air cargo services. Given Leipzig's strategic location and existing partnership with Antonov, the expansion is expected to strengthen Leipzig's position in global logistics networks, particularly for ultra-heavy or oversized cargo that the Antonov fleet specialises in, due to the ongoing war and closure of Ukrainian airspace. The expected increase in operational capacity and reliability could potentially position Leipzig Airport as a key player in the aviation, finance, transportation, and industry sectors.
