Arson Attack on Berlin Power Grid Triggers €70M Tech Park Blackout
A deliberate arson attack on a power pylon caused a multi-day blackout in southeastern Berlin on 9 September 2025. The outage disrupted over 1,000 businesses at Adlershof Technology Park, with estimated damages reaching between €30 million and €70 million. Authorities confirmed the attack specifically targeted tech firms in the area. The fire knocked out electricity for days, affecting around 50,000 households and businesses. Sectors dependent on servers—such as tsunami warning systems and AI modelling—faced the worst disruptions. While the exact number of impacted companies remains unclear, the total material losses fell within a wide range due to varying business vulnerabilities.
Adlershof had already seen steady growth before the incident. Employment at the park rose by 1.7% in 2025, reaching 29,600 workers. Revenue for the year hit €4.2 billion, up 5% from 2024. Without the outage, this growth could have been roughly two percentage points higher. The attack exposed infrastructure weaknesses despite the park's capacity for expansion. Adlershof currently has space for nearly double its workforce, but limited transport links remain a hurdle. In response, the Berlin Senate is now collaborating with grid operator Stromnetz Berlin to upgrade redundant safety systems at the site.
The arson attack disrupted operations and cut into revenue growth for Adlershof's businesses. Few companies have considered relocating, but the incident has pushed authorities to reinforce power grid protections. Repairs and security upgrades are now underway to prevent future disruptions.
