Arson suspected in Idar-Oberstein apartment fire as suspect arrested

Investigators have determined that a fire in an apartment building on Idar-Oberstein's Hauptstraße on the evening of February 15, 2026, was deliberately set.

Based on the ongoing police investigation—including forensic evidence from the fire scene and witness statements—authorities have established strong suspicion against a 27-year-old resident of the building. As a result, the Bad Kreuznach District Court issued an arrest warrant.

The suspect was provisionally detained on February 19, 2026, and, following a judicial hearing on February 20, 2026, was remanded to a Rhineland-Palatinate correctional facility.

A damage assessor has since estimated the total losses from fire and secondary damage to be in the mid-six-figure range.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, though all residents of the building were evacuated by firefighters.
