Aschaffenburg Launches Bid for Memorial Site - Aschaffenburg to Build Memorial for 2025 Knife Attack Victims by 2028
Aschaffenburg is planning a memorial to honour the victims of a knife attack that took place in Schöntal Park in January 2025. The city aims to create an open space that focuses on remembrance, education, and hope rather than fear or grief. A final decision on the memorial's location will be made by autumn 2025.
On January 22, 2025, an Afghan man attacked a group of children in Schöntal Park with a knife. Two children died, and four others were injured. The attacker was later ruled not criminally responsible due to mental illness and placed in a secure forensic psychiatric unit.
The city has formed an interdisciplinary commission, including politicians, administrators, and cultural representatives, to develop the memorial concept. An artists' competition will determine the final design. Construction is expected to finish by January 22, 2028, with a budget of €300,000.
Alongside the memorial, Aschaffenburg plans additional initiatives to promote civic engagement. One such project is a workshop on civic courage aimed at young people.
The memorial will serve as a place for reflection and learning. By combining art, education, and community involvement, the city hopes to create a lasting tribute. The project remains on track for completion within the set timeframe and budget.
