Assam CM Sarma slams Congress over infrastructure and women's empowerment policies
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly criticised opposition parties, particularly the Indian National Congress, over their stance on government policies. Speaking recently, he defended his administration's record on infrastructure and women's empowerment while attacking past governance under Congress rule.
Sarma took office on May 10, 2021, and has since overseen major infrastructure upgrades. By March 2026, his government completed over 1,200 road projects, including 850 km of new highways, 350 bridges, and rural road improvements under schemes like PMGSY. These developments have expanded access to education, healthcare, and jobs across the state.
The Chief Minister contrasted this progress with the previous Congress-led government, describing that era as one of 'broken roads and unrealised dreams.' He claimed the current period offered 'smooth roads and fulfilled dreams,' pointing to visible improvements in daily life. He also defended women's empowerment schemes, which have faced opposition criticism. Despite mockery from rival parties, the government continued rolling out programmes that delivered direct benefits to women in Assam.
The Assam government's infrastructure push has reshaped transport networks and public services. With over 1,200 projects completed, officials argue that better roads and bridges have lifted communities. Meanwhile, women's empowerment initiatives remain a key focus, even as political debates over their impact continue.
