Assam Prepares for Historic 10,000-Artist Bagurumba Performance in Guwahati
Assam is set to host another record-breaking cultural event on January 17 in Guwahati. Over 10,000 artistes will perform Bagurumba, the traditional dance of the Bodo community, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The state has previously organised large-scale performances, including Bihu and Jhumoir, to showcase its rich heritage.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the grand Bagurumba performance, marking the latest in a series of massive cultural displays. In February 2023, more than 11,000 artistes performed Bihu at the same venue. A year earlier, over 8,000 young men and women from the Adivasi tea garden community presented Jhumoir, another traditional dance, with Prime Minister Modi in attendance.
Preparations for the upcoming event have been closely reviewed to ensure everything runs smoothly. The performance aims to bring global attention to Assam’s vibrant traditions. During the Jhumoir event, Modi even played the dhomsa, a traditional drum, to kick off the celebrations.
The Prime Minister has often praised Assam’s cultural diversity. He previously noted that the region’s heritage was overlooked in the past. His visits, including a stay at Kaziranga National Park, have highlighted the state’s growing prominence.
The Bagurumba performance will be one of the largest cultural gatherings in Assam. With high-profile attendees and meticulous planning, the event is expected to further promote the state’s traditions. Past performances, like Jhumoir and Bihu, have already set benchmarks for scale and global outreach.
