Assam protesters demand justice, immigration reform and economic relief in Dibrugarh rally

Protesters took to the streets of Dibrugarh on Friday, demanding action on long-standing issues in Assam. Members of Asomiya Yuva Mancha and Asomiya Mahila Mancha staged a demonstration, calling for justice, stricter immigration controls, and economic relief.

The rally focused on three key demands: justice for cultural icon Zubeen Garg, full implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, and the deportation of illegal immigrants under the Assam Accord. Ranu Tamuli, Secretary of Asomiya Mahila Mancha, criticised the government's handling of Garg's case, noting that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had initially promised justice but later shifted responsibility to the judiciary.

The ILP system, a long-pending demand, has faced repeated delays. Though introduced in Assam in 2019 after protests by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), its enforcement remains incomplete. Legal challenges, including Supreme Court scrutiny over its constitutional validity under Article 371B, and political resistance—particularly from the BJP-led government over economic concerns—have stalled progress. A leader from Asomiya Yuva Mancha highlighted that despite nearly a decade in power, the current administration has yet to finalise the system. Protesters also urged stricter controls on rising prices of essential goods. They insisted on faster deportation of illegal immigrants, arguing that the Assam Accord's provisions must be enforced without further delay.

The demonstration in Dibrugarh underscored ongoing frustrations over unmet promises. Demands for justice, immigration reform, and economic stability remain unresolved, with activists pressing for immediate government action. The ILP system, in particular, continues to face legal and political hurdles, leaving its future uncertain.
