Assam’s Barpeta district grinds to a halt as workers strike over pension reforms

Government employees in Assam’s Barpeta district have begun a pen-down strike to protest against the National Pension System (NPS). The action, launched on Thursday, brought administrative work to a standstill as staff demanded the return of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

The strike was organized by the All Assam District Administration Employees' Association, with widespread participation from workers at the Barpeta Deputy Commissioner’s office. All official tasks, including public services and file processing, were completely halted.

The strike has disrupted daily administration in Barpeta, with no immediate end in sight. If the government does not respond, organizers plan to expand protests across Assam in the coming months. The outcome will depend on whether officials engage with the employees’ demands.
