Assam's government employees demand timely 8th Pay Commission rollout by 2026
A major meeting in Guwahati this week brought together over 300 representatives from Assam's government workforce. Organised by the Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP), the gathering focused on the upcoming 8th Pay Commission and its impact on state employees.
The extended executive meeting took place on Wednesday, drawing office-bearers from more than 50 organisational districts. Attendees included members of over 80 teachers' and employees' associations, highlighting widespread concern over the new pay structure.
Participants stressed the need to avoid repeating the delays and issues seen during the 7th Pay Commission's rollout. In 2016, Assam implemented the 7th Pay Commission from April 1, three months later than the central government's January 1 start date. This lag created financial and administrative challenges for state employees. The meeting's central demand was clear: the 8th Pay Commission report must take effect in Assam from January 1, 2026, matching the Government of India's timeline. Delegates also insisted that unresolved anomalies from the 7th Pay Commission be fixed before the new report is introduced. Assam has already formed its 8th Pay Commission, with a report expected within 12 months. However, other states like Uttar Pradesh are still in the process of setting up their panels, while Bihar has yet to make any announcements. The delay in Assam's 7th Pay Commission implementation remains a key concern, with employees pushing for better alignment this time.
The large turnout at the meeting underscored the urgency among Assam's government workforce. Employees want the 8th Pay Commission implemented on time and without past errors. Their demands now put pressure on the state government to address both timing and unresolved issues before the new pay structure begins.
