Assam’s mega dam protest delayed to November 15 over cultural festival

A planned protest against the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's (NHPC) Lower Subansiri Mega Dam project in Gerukamukh has been postponed. The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and the Indigenous People's Organization of Assam announced the delay due to the ongoing Raax festival celebrations across the state.

Initially scheduled for November 7, the protest was to be a mass blockade against NHPC, demanding the permanent closure of the project. Both AJYCP and the Indigenous People's Organization view the mega dam projects in the region as a threat to Assam's civilization, culture, biodiversity, and ecological balance.

The organizations have decided to temporarily suspend their protest and reschedule the mass blockade programme after the Raax festival. The renewed protest is now planned for November 15, 2025.

The protest against the NHPC's Lower Subansiri Mega Dam project has been postponed to November 15, 2025, following the Raax festival. The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad and the Indigenous People's Organization remain committed to their cause, aiming to protect Assam's cultural heritage and environmental balance.
