Astana honors Armenian scholar Mesrop Mashtots with a new street name

A new street in Astana now bears the name of Mesrop Mashtots, the 5th-century Armenian scholar who invented the Armenian alphabet. The official opening took place during a ceremony attended by senior officials from Kazakhstan and Armenia, including Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on his state visit.

The decision to honour Mashtots was first announced in April 2024, when Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited Yerevan. The move reflects the deep cultural ties between the two nations, as Mashtots remains a foundational figure in Armenian culture for establishing the country’s written language.

The newly named Mesrop Mashtots Street stands as a permanent symbol of Armenia-Kazakhstan relations. Its inauguration coincides with ongoing efforts to deepen cultural and diplomatic exchanges between the two nations.
