Astana’s Bold Infrastructure Overhaul: Light Rail, Roads, and Water Upgrades Underway

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has outlined major infrastructure plans for Astana during a recent meeting with city officials. The projects include expanding the light rail network, building new water facilities, and improving key roads. He also expressed strong confidence in Akim Zhenis Kassymbek’s ability to deliver these initiatives on time.

The President instructed officials to complete the fourth drinking water station by its deadline. He also pushed for preparations to launch the second wastewater treatment plant and upgrade local sewage systems. These moves aim to strengthen Astana’s water management and sanitation infrastructure.

Transport improvements were another focus. Tokayev proposed constructing a two-level road along Kabanbai Batyr Avenue to ease traffic congestion. He also backed the expansion of the city’s light rail transit (LRT) network, signalling a push for better public transport. Kassymbek, appointed akim of Pavlodar Region in March 2023, is a member of the Amanat party (formerly Nur Otan). The President made it clear that Astana should set an example for large-scale projects across the country.

The new directives set clear deadlines for water, sewage, and transport upgrades. Kassymbek’s leadership will be key in executing these plans. If successful, the projects could position Astana as a model for urban development in Kazakhstan.
