Astana's LRT Begins Test Operations, Koshchy Line Coming Soon
Test operations of Kazakhstan's Light Rail Transit (LRT) system began on September 29. The first segment, towards Koshchy, is expected to be completed within a year and a half. The LRT aims to ease congestion caused by over 50,000 daily commuters and 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles from Koshchy.
The LRT line to Koshchy is part of the project's second phase. It will be partially above ground, with access to the overpass and tracks posing life-threatening risks. Once completed, it will serve a significant number of commuters, potentially reducing traffic on major streets.
The next branch of the LRT system will run towards Syganak Street, Turan, and the historic district of Astana with the old station. However, the planned completion dates for these segments have not been publicly specified yet.
The LRT system in Kazakhstan is expected to improve commuter experience and reduce traffic congestion. The first segment towards Koshchy is on track for completion within a year and a half, with test operations already underway. Fares for the LRT are anticipated to be between 100 and 200 tenge per ride.
