Augsburger Allgemeine's digital architect steps down after transformative tenure

Roland Mitterbauer has stepped down from his role leading the Content & Products initiative at the Augsburger Allgemeine. His departure follows nearly two years of driving the newspaper's digital transformation. The company has announced no plans to replace him externally.

Mitterbauer took charge of the digital strategy in September 2023. Under his leadership, the publication's online reach doubled by March 2026, rising from around 1.2 million to 2.4 million monthly unique users. At the same time, digital subscriptions grew from 25% to 45% of the total subscription base.

He also oversaw efforts to align editorial content, product development, and digital business models. Bernhard Hock, a senior executive at Mediengruppe Pressedruck, praised Mitterbauer's impact on the group's digital shift. In response, Mitterbauer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to shape the newspaper's transformation.

With his departure, some responsibilities will shift to existing staff. Lena Jakat, the deputy editor-in-chief, will take on additional duties alongside Editor-in-Chief Andrea Kämpfbeck and Peter Müller.

The Augsburger Allgemeine will not seek an external replacement for Mitterbauer's position. His work leaves behind a stronger digital presence and a higher share of digital subscriptions. The team will now adjust to the new distribution of tasks.
