Augsburg's Mayoral Race Heats Up: Aigner vs. Freund
Augsburg's mayoral election is intensifying. On March 8, 2026, residents will choose between Hannes Aigner, the Free Voters' candidate, and Florian Freund, the SPD's nominee. The election could result in a bourgeois government for the next six years, if current trends persist.
Hannes Aigner, a four-time canoe world champion and economist, is leading the Free Voters' campaign. His team includes Raluca Sandner and Jürgen Marks. Aigner previously led a coalition with Freie Wähler, FDP, and Pro Augsburg before running independently. The intervention at Leonhardsberg, which may be linked to the 2020 CSU-Green coalition agreement, has become a key election issue. Aigner's stance on this and other topics has drawn support, potentially securing a bourgeois government.
Florian Freund, the SPD's candidate, has aggressively criticized incumbent mayor Eva Weber's coalition. He argues for a change in leadership, promising a different approach to governance. The city's recent spending of 160,000 euros on traffic calming measures on the West-East axis, implemented in 1954, has also become a point of contention. Cyclists can still travel at up to 50 km/h on Leonhardsberg, while drivers face a 70 euro fine at the same speed.
The candidate lists for the Augsburg mayoral election are now complete. With the election just weeks away, both Aigner and Freund are making their cases to voters. The outcome could significantly shape the city's future for the next six years.
