Austria cracks down on Temu's deceptive sales tactics and fake scarcity
Austrian authorities have forced Temu to stop misleading business practices after a formal warning. The online marketplace was accused of deceptive tactics, including fake scarcity claims and mismatched product images. Regulators in at least 15 other countries have also taken action against the platform since 2023.
The Austrian Federal Competition Authority (BWB) found that Temu's website used false statements to pressure shoppers. Phrases like 'almost sold out' or 'only 2 left' created artificial urgency, while product images often did not match the actual items. The investigation revealed a pattern of deceptive advertising designed to manipulate consumer decisions.
Temu fully cooperated with the probe and agreed to corrective measures. Economic Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer welcomed the outcome, insisting that international platforms must follow the same rules as local businesses. He warned that Austria would not tolerate becoming a dumping ground for cheap or unfairly marketed goods.
Trade leaders also praised the decision. Rainer Will, Managing Director of the Austrian Trade Association, called it a key step toward fair competition. Rainer Trefelik, trade spokesman for the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO), emphasised that global platforms must not exploit regulatory gaps. Similar investigations have been launched by regulators in the UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Canada, and other countries over the past year.
The BWB's intervention has halted Temu's misleading practices in Austria. The case sets a precedent for enforcing equal standards on international e-commerce platforms. Authorities in multiple countries continue to scrutinise the company's operations.
